The best thing a smartphone can do is help you to be your healthiest, best self. It can absolutely do that with the right apps. There’s are so many options out there, so I’ve only listed a few here to get you started on your journey to a better you.

Meal Planning

There are several options for meal planning apps it would be easy to find one that is just right for you. Meal planning apps help you to plan out meals and snacks ahead of time, saving you from the dreaded fast food fall back, in turn helping you to stay within your caloric budget to bulk up or slim down.

Pepperplate is app and meal planning tool that organizes recipes, plans your meals, and puts together your shopping lists.  The app allows you to import recipes using the URL or enter them manually. Pepperplate then generates a shopping list based on your meal plan. You can share your recipes, meal plans, or shopping lists with others if you need to.

Calorie Tracking Apps

One of the easiest ways to get and stay fit is by tracking your caloric input and output. MyFitnessPal is one of the most popular calorie counters and one of my favorite apps. It tracks your weight gain or loss progress and calculates a recommended daily calorie intake. It also contains an easy to use food diary and an exercise log. On the homepage, there’s an overview of how many calories you’ve consumed during the day and how much of your intake limit remains, as well as how many calories you’ve burned through exercise. If you’re using a fitness tracking device, the device may be able to sync with it and include that data in your exercise log. MyFitnessPal tracks your progress and includes chat forums with fellow users if you need a little extra motivation.

Vitamin/Nutrient Tracking

Not sure if your diet is providing you with all the vitamins you need to stay in tip-top shape? The Wholesome app is a must have for tracking what you eat and identifying if there are any nutrient gaps in your diet and lets you easily track net carbs and adjust your nutrient goals in grams. The app tracks over 90 vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants, proteins, carbs, and fat. This is an ideal app for those who have chosen a vegetarian or vegan diet and well as those who have found results in a Keto diet.

Run/Bike Tracking

If running, walking, or biking is your preferred daily activity, then you’ll want to check out Map My Run which will not only track your run but help in the planning process of where to run. This tracker records distance, elevation, calories burned, and pace. It can sync with your tracker, as well as the My Fitness Pal app, so you can sync your diet and exercise info together for a holistic plan that works towards a better you.

Fitness videos

Stay active even on the go with fitness videos and workouts. YouTube is a great place to start if you want to keep it simple, but if you’re looking for something with more options then try Skimble’s Workout Trainer app, it has thousands of free workout audios and videos with timed, step-by-step instructions to help you shape up and see results. With this app, you can also access the app’s library to build your own custom routines and share them.

We only get one body and now it’s easier than ever to keep it working at its full potential by using our smartphones to keep us on track. Do a little research and find the apps that work best for you and your fitness and health needs.
